1. Wait for your EOB before paying
Your Explanation of Benefits from your insurer shows what you actually owe. Do not pay any bill before your EOB has been issued and you have compared the two documents.
-
2. Request an itemized bill
If you only have a summary bill, request an itemized version. You cannot verify charges without it — and you have the right to one at no cost.
-
3. Check for duplicate charges
Scan the itemized bill for the same service appearing more than once, or multiple charges that seem to describe the same thing.
-
4. Verify insurance was applied correctly
Compare the insurance payment shown on the bill with your EOB. If they differ, the billing department needs to reconcile the two before you pay.
-
5. Check for services you don't recognize
If any line item doesn't match your recollection of what happened during your visit, ask the billing department to explain it before paying.
-
6. Ask about financial assistance
If the balance is large and you have concerns about paying it, ask about financial assistance or charity care before agreeing to a payment plan.
-
7. Get any agreements in writing
If you negotiate a discount, financial assistance, or a payment plan, get the terms confirmed in writing before making your first payment.
